Breast Surgery
Breast surgery involves altering the breasts of both women and men for various reasons. These surgeries can be cosmetic or medically necessary, including treatments for breast cancer, benign breast lumps, and breast reduction to alleviate back pain.
Breast Surgery Options At Arcus
The following breast surgery procedures are carried out by our plastic and cosmetic breast surgeons:
Gynecomastia: The term “man boobs” is medically referred to as gynecomastia, which arises from obesity, hormonal fluctuations, or abnormal breast tissues, causing men to develop female-like breasts. This often leads to self-consciousness and a reluctance to be unclothed. Treatment options include liposuction or tissue excision. Recovery typically involves a 3-4 week period and may require an overnight hospital stay. The results are permanent, although regaining chest weight, which is rare, can reverse the effects.
Breast Augmentation: Also known as mammoplasty, this surgery increases breast size using silicone gel or salineimplants. Typically performed as an outpatient procedure under general anesthesia, it may sometimes necessitate hospitalization. The FDA approves this surgery for women over 18. Ideal candidates for breast augmentation have fully developed breasts, maintain realistic expectations about the surgery, are free from serious medical conditions, and are not pregnant or breastfeeding.
Breast Reduction: Breast reduction surgery involves removing surplus tissue, fat, and skin to decrease breast size, creating smaller, more uplifted breasts. This procedure is ideal for individuals who are unhappy with their large, heavy breasts, suffer from shoulder, neck, or back pain, or have skin indentations from bra straps due to the weight of their breasts. The least invasive method for those who require a very slight reduction in breast size is liposuction. This procedure also improves skin elasticity and corrects sagging if it occurs, which is particularly useful when breast size is excessively large due to excess fatty tissue.
Breast Lift: This technique is ideal for women looking to lift sagging breasts or alter the size and shape of the areola. It involves breast augmentation and remodeling treatments that tighten the breast tissue, remove excess skin, reshape the remaining skin, and adjust the position of the nipple and areola. The perfect candidates are those with sagging chests, breasts that have lost their shape or volume, flat, elongated, or pendulous breasts, stretched breast skin and areola, nipples or areolas that point downward, and breasts that are uneven, with one lower than the other.
Breast Reconstruction: This surgical treatment restores breasts, usually following a mastectomy for cancer treatment, helping to regain volume and a normal appearance. The physical effects of a mastectomy can be distressing, but this surgery can boost confidence and improve how one feels about their appearance. It also restores a normal look. Some choose this procedure for cosmetic reasons, such as correcting breasts of different sizes.
Asymmetric Breast Correction: Breast asymmetry occurs when breasts are uneven or differ in size and/or shape. This condition can be addressed through breast surgery, a popular approach that may include enlargement, reduction, or lifting to achieve more symmetrical and balanced breasts, boosting body confidence. The causes of breast asymmetry range from changes during puberty, hormonal fluctuations, and nipple position to physical changes during and after pregnancy, trauma, and genetics.
Inverted Nipple Correction: This procedure is performed on individuals with inverted nipples from birth or women whose nipples have retracted due to breastfeeding. Various surgical techniques are used depending on the individual’s needs. The goal is to have the nipple naturally protrude from the areola by freeing and stretching the connective tissues that pull the nipples inward. The procedure is carried out under local anesthesia.
Axillary Breast Surgery (Or) Accessory Breast Surgery: Is a procedure that eliminates excess tissues from the axilla, or armpit, which may include breast glandular tissues, lymph nodes, or fat tissues. This procedure typically combines liposuction and excision surgery, although in some cases, each technique may be used independently to remove the underarm lump. The presence of breast tissue in the underarm area can lead to both cosmetic and physical issues. Some individuals address the condition in its early stages when the growth is minimal. However, as the tissues expand, they become more visible and can even impact arm mobility.
Fibroadenoma: Is a benign breast lump, typically solid and composed of fibrous and glandular tissues. These smooth, round masses are usually harmless and may shrink or vanish, though there’s a small chance they could develop cancer. They are most frequently found in individuals aged 15 to 35 but can also appear in men, though rarely. As part of the treatment, a laser device guided by ultrasound is typically used to minimize scarring and preserve the shape of the breast. This outpatient procedure doesn’t need general anesthesia or an overnight hospital stay.
